Canada Wood Japan, a CCCJ Corporate Member, released their case study video on Japan’s first large scale NLT (Nail Laminated Timber) project. The Tokyo University of the Arts International Exchange Center is an innovative 5-storey hybrid steel and wood frame building which adopts the commercial use of Canadian SPF dimension lumber in an NLT mass timber floor system. Through incorporation of sustainable wooden structural assemblies, this project achieved a carbon emissions reduction of 27.6% over traditional steel framed structures. The project also served to confirm the commercial feasibility of Canadian SPF NLT floor systems for use in Japan’s mass timber market. Specialist bilingual recruitment firm Robert Walters Japan, a CCCJ Corporate Member, announced the results of its Salary Survey 2023 on 15 December, in which 864 company employees working in Japan, mainly in the Tokyo and Kansai regions, and 196 Japanese companies responded. One of the survey’s key findings noted a "rising cost of living and inflation" among Japanese companies. As the prevention of staff turnover (talent retention) is extremely important in Japan's labour market, where there is a of considerable talent shortage, the survey investigated the extent to which current inflation is affecting companies and changing the attitudes of company employees towards their work.

On September 15th, the CCCJ hosted the September Monthly Mixer at our corporate member, The Tokyo Toranomon EDITION’s 31st floor Lobby Bar. This was our 4th Monthly Mixer in 2022. Not being able to hold the mixer during the summer, we were happy to see some familiar faces and meet lots of new people at the event.
Canadian Chamber of Commerce in Japan Honorary Board of Advisors and the Board of Governors got together to revive the ties and talked about the next steps to move forward together over dinner prepared by Seiji Omote, Governor, HBA. The meeting was a place where they inspired each other.
On September 8th, CCCJ members were invited to join this special hybrid event hosted by The Japan International Dispute Resolution Center (JIDRC), Japan Commercial Arbitration Association (JCAA), and European Business Council in Japan (EBC). Starting with an on-site/virtual tour of the JIDRC’s facilities, representatives from these organizations gave an informative presentation on International arbitrations in Japan.
